“Alder wood isnt the best species to use for firewood, but it can make top grade charcoal which can be used as a component of gun powder. I had some alder logs which werent decent enough to carve ladles and spoons, so split and cut them for the fire instead. The alder logs are the long orange ones up on end. One peculiarity of alder wood is that it is very durable if it is permanently sodden with water. For this reason it was often used to make pilings for piers, breakwaters and jetties, or in docks. The iron age people used alder poles as stilt-like supports for their island like lake dwellings, for the same reason. Traditionally in England spoons, ladles and eating dishes plates and bowls were made from alder wood. It is light and easy to carve green or dry.”
